The very first Gibson artist model, with a deep body and a big sound to match

Nick Lucas was one of the most popular American entertainers in the world in the 1920s. Known as The Crooning Troubadour, he performed on the vaudeville circuit, played solo and also played jazz with big bands, played command performances for European royalty, and was among the very first musicians to play and record guitar solos. He was also one of the first radio stars to perform with a guitar, and his recordings influenced the likes of Merle Travis. Today, his artistry is recognized as contributing to the popularity of the guitar, which is perfect for vocal accompaniment and an excellent solo instrument. Frank Campbell, Gibson’s General Sales Manager at the time, approached Lucas and tried to convince him to switch to playing Gibson guitars. Lucas said he would–if Gibson would build one to his specifications, and Gibson readily agreed. The result was the Nick Lucas Special, which was introduced in 1926 and was Gibson’s first artist signature model. One of the things that Lucas requested was a compact but deeper body for better bass response. The Nick Lucas Special went through a range of variations in body woods, bridges, and other features, but they all had a deeper body in common, which contributes to the model’s unique voice, which is rich and surprisingly full and complex for a small-bodied instrument.

Now, Gibson Custom is proud to introduce the 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged. Based on those early artist models, the mahogany body has a similar shape as the Gibson L-00, but it is significantly deeper, with an approximate 4.082” body depth at the head and 4.52” depth at the tail. The bound body features multi-ply top binding with gold sparkle and multi-ply back binding. The top is thermally aged red spruce, and the L-2 style rosette also features gold sparkle, which is one of the visual hallmarks of the Nick Lucas Special. The mahogany neck joins the body at the 12th fret and has a C-shaped profile. The bound rosewood fretboard is equipped with 20 frets and is adorned with mother-of-pearl Nick Lucas inlays with engraved details. Gold Waverly tuners with ivoroid oval buttons are installed on the headstock, which also features a vintage-style “The Gibson” logo in mother-of-pearl. The rosewood rectangular open slot bridge has a bone saddle, and the nut and bridge pins are also bone. The Argentine Grey finish features Light Aging from the artisans of the Murphy Lab. The Murphy Lab Light Aged finish treatment, paired with lightly aged hardware, simulates decades of light play wear, giving it the unique character, vibe, and feel of an original example from the Gibson Golden Era. The 1929 Nick Lucas Special Light Aged comes packed in a red line-style hardshell case. Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, was an owner and frequent user of multiple Gibson SJ-200 acoustic guitars - the "King of the Flat-Tops." The new Gibson Elvis SJ-200 is based on a guitar that was given to Elvis as a gift at a recording session at RCA Studio B in Nashville in the mid-1960s. He used the guitar for numerous live performances. Elvis gave it to his aide and close friend Marty Lacker at Graceland in 1976. The legendary J-160E, with all the classic visual appeal, and now with improved performance

The Gibson J-160E is a legendary model, and for many players, it needs no introduction, but for players who may be unfamiliar with its history, it is most closely associated with The Beatles, who used the model extensively, including on their landmark first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and on many of the recordings from the first half of their career. The J-160E was first introduced in 1954 as the second Gibson acoustic model to feature onboard electronics (after the CF-100E, which was released in 1951), in the form of a coverless P-90 pickup mounted through the top, just below the end of the fretboard. While it has a round shoulder shape similar to the Southern Jumbo and J-45™, it was designed from the beginning as a dual-purpose model that could function both electrically and acoustically, with somewhat more emphasis placed on its electrical performance.

Now, Gibson is very proud to introduce the J-160E Original, a new model based on those vintage classics, enhanced with upgrades and improvements that make it better than ever, in both its acoustic and electric performance. It features a back and sides made from solid mahogany. Instead of the laminated top and ladder bracing used on vintage models, the J-160E Original features a solid Sitka spruce top that is reinforced with our traditional scalloped X-bracing for a full, round shoulder acoustic tone when played unplugged. The mahogany neck has a comfortable and fast-playing SlimTaper™ profile and is attached to the body at the 15th fret using our compound dovetail neck-to-body joint, and like all Gibson acoustic guitars, it is fitted with hot hide glue for maximum resonance and tonal transfer. The bound rosewood fretboard is equipped with 20 standard frets and dressed up with pearloid trapezoid inlays. The belly-up bridge is also rosewood and is equipped with a bone saddle and TUSQ® bridge pins. The nut is also bone, and nickel Gotoh® Keystone tuners ensure fast, accurate, and stable tuning so you can spend more time playing and less time tuning.

Like its vintage predecessors, the J-160E Original is equipped with a pickup, but instead of the P-90 found in previous versions, the J-160 Original features a P-90 DC pickup that is wired to top-mounted master volume and tone controls, both of which feature 60s-style gold Top Hat knobs with silver reflectors, and wired to a side-mounted output jack. The P-90 DC delivers the classic P-90 tone but without the hum, for improved, noise-free electrified performance. While the Gibson J-185 may not have achieved the same universal name recognition as models like the J-45™M, SJ-200™, and Hummingbird™, it has long held a special place among knowledgeable players, who consider it one of the best-sounding acoustic guitars Gibson has ever made. Originally released in 1951, the J-185's body outline drew inspiration from the celebrated 1920s L-5 models, sharing much of their silhouette and proportions. Slightly more compact than an SJ-200 and built with the familiar 24.75" scale length also found on the J-45 and Hummingbird, the J-185 carved out a tonal identity that has made it a favorite for decades.

Gibson now introduces a fresh interpretation of this beloved platform: the J-185 Century 12-Fret. It carries forward many of the hallmark appointments that define the classic J-185, but the shift to a

12-fret neck-to-body joint sets it apart from the standard 14-fret design. This configuration shortens the neck and moves the bridge plate farther from the waist and closer to the body's widest point, enhancing top movement and improving playing comfort. The result is a warm, lively, and responsive voice that especially suits fingerstyle players and anyone with a lighter, nuanced touch.

Because any J-185 variant is relatively uncommon, let alone 12-fret versions, this new model gives a much wider audience the chance to experience the tonal character that only a 12-fret jumbo can offer. As part of the Century Collection, created to mark 100 Years of Gibson Flat-Tops, the J-185

Century 12-Fret pairs a mahogany body with a Sitka spruce top and is outlined with single-ply cream binding on the top and back.

Its mahogany neck features a fast, comfortable Slim Taper™ 12-Fret profile and is joined to the body at the 12th fret using a compound dovetail neck joint secured with hot hide glue, consistent with Gibson acoustic build tradition. The bound rosewood fingerboard hosts 19 frets and understated mother-of-pearl dot inlays.

The headstock showcases open-back Golden Age strap tuners with cream buttons, along with an early-1900s Gibson script logo decal that reinforces the vintage aesthetic. Complementing these details is a sloped rectangle closed-slot rosewood bridge reminiscent of early -45 instruments.

Bone is used for both the nut and saddle, while the bridge pins are TUSQ®. The J-185 Century

12-Fret is fitted with a Gibson oval teardrop pickguard and finished with a hand-applied satin nitrocellulose lacquer in Vintage Amber, Vintage Sunburst, or Ebony. It ships in a premium Century Collection tweed hardshell case and is offered in both right-handed and left-handed configurations.
