The new Tri Tone is inspired by the extremely rare, vintage Supro Triple Tone guitar. This tuxedo-black, 3-pickup, art deco masterpiece made its original debut in 1959 and was produced for only a single year. Sixty years after the release of the original Triple Tone, Supro is re-introducing this unique instrument for 2019 with modernizations like set-neck construction, tune-o-matic bridge and increased access to upper frets—now making the Tri Tone a serious player’s guitar with authentic vintage mojo. The Tri Tone shares its distinctive, single-cutaway body shape with the best-selling Dual Tone model, played by Link Wray and David Bowie. The body of the Tri Tone is made of solid mahogany. The fully bound neck is constructed of hard rock maple, sporting a seductively smooth, black satin finish on the back, and a 12”-radius pau ferro fretboard on the front.
Along with the distinctive jet-black color, reverse stairstep tailpiece, brushed gold hardware and stylized double pickguard, a defining highlight of the original instrument was the trio of Ralph Keller-designed Vistatone pickups. Although they look like humbuckers, Vistatone pickups are in fact noise-cancelling single coil pickups that deliver a ton of output. For the brand new 2019 Tri Tone, we’ve used the triple-pickup format to combine a pair of authentic Vistatone pickups in the neck and middle position, with an overwound Super Alnico unit in the bridge. Custom-made for the 2019 Tri Tone, these powerful, vintage-correct single coil pickups deliver a wide variety of Supro tones, ranging from warm jazz and smoldering blues to southern rock and fuzzed-out psychedelia. The full sonic palette of the Tri Tone can be accessed using the dedicated volume knobs for each pickup, the 5-way selector switch and the master volume control.
The Triple Tone was Supro’s 3-pickup version of the Dual Tone, which was produced only for a single year. Besides the beautifully distinctive jet-black finish, gold hardware and double pickguard, one of the main highlights of this instrument was the trio of Ralph Keller-designed Vistatone pickups. Although they look like humbuckers, they were in fact unique noise-cancelling single coil pickups that delivered a fairly hot signal for the time.

The Black Holiday is an all-new Supro instrument, based on the Chicago-made, res-o-glass guitars of the 1960s. While the vintage Supro instruments were constructed entirely of fiberglass, the updated construction technique mates a newly developed composite “Acousti-glass” top to a chambered mahogany back for greater semi-acoustic resonance and tuning stability over the originals. The Supro Black Holiday’s Art Deco lines and two-knob control layout combine elements from several different Supro res-o-glass models of the past to create a new guitar that is worthy of a place alongside the reissues of these iconic American guitars.
The Black Holiday’s vintage correct tuners, stairstep tailpiece and adjustable rosewood bridge are joined by a reproduction of the legendary Vistatone pickup. The Vistatone pickups found in the Supro Black Holiday are a faithful replica of the groundbreaking, single-coil design developed for Valco by Ralph Keller in the early 1950s. The Vistatone pickup is cited as prior art in Seth Lover’s PAF patent and is found in many of the most desirable vintage Supro models.
The Supro Black Holiday has a powerful, electric swamp-blues tone that is anything but subtle. It’s a gnarly sounding instrument that loves tube amps and fuzz pedals of all kinds. The neck pickup sounds huge and wooly, while the bridge pickup has an unmistakable midrange growl that is downright dirty. Our semi-hollow recipe of an Acousti-glass top and mahogany body retains the unique sonic characteristics of the original res-o-glass models while providing today’s musicians with a lightweight, highly playable instrument that stays in tune and is easy to maintain.
The Black Holiday guitar and its relatives in the Americana Series of Supro electric guitars were designed by Trevor Wilkinson and David Koltai to capture the spirit and sound of the Art Deco-influenced, historic line of Supro instruments. Case sold separately.

“When Reality got underway, Bowie had only recently invested in several Supro guitars, one of them a hard-to-find white model similar to that played by Link Wray on ‘Rumble’. He’d managed to pick this up on eBay (I kid you not) and had it revamped by Staten Island designer/ manufacturer/ restorer Flip Scipio. After Scipio went to work on it, Bowie ended up with a guitar that, according to Tony Visconti, “was never meant to sound so good”, and he played this a lot during the Reality sessions, along with a Supro 12-string that had also been overhauled by Flip Scipio, and some harsh-sounding Supro valve amps.” – Richard Buskin from “Recording Reality” – Sound on Sound Magazine, October 2003
“I feel that reality has become an abstract for so many people over the last 20 years. Things that they regarded as truths seem to have just melted away, and it’s almost as if we’re thinking post-philosophically now. There’s nothing to rely on any more. No knowledge, only interpretation of those facts that we seem to be inundated with on a daily basis. Knowledge seems to have been left behind and there’s a sense that we are adrift at sea. There’s nothing more to hold onto, and of course political circumstances just push that boat further out.” – David Bowie from “Recording Reality” – Sound on Sound Magazine, October 2003

The Westbury is a 21st-century update of the Supro electric solid-body guitar. The elegant comfort of the 1960’s-era beveled-edge Ozark body shape and the mighty sound of the original field-coil pickups have been enhanced with an ultra-fast satin neck, Tune-o-matic bridge and updated wave tailpiece. The result is a modern player’s instrument with old-school style and authentic Supro tone.
The unique Gold Foil pickups found in the Supro Westbury are faithful reproductions of the original magnetics developed for Valco by Ralph Keller in the early 1950s. These pickups, which gave voice to the vintage Chicago-made Supro guitars, have a massive, broadband sound with remarkably low noise for a single-coil design. The humbucker-sized Gold Foil bridge pickup found in the Westbury is slightly overwound, while the neck pickup is reverse-wound in order to provide fully hum-cancelling sound when the two pickups are combined by selecting the middle position of the 3-way toggle switch.
The time-tested tone wood recipe of an alder body paired with a 25.5 in.-scale maple neck and rosewood fretboard combine with the Westbury's vintage-correct pickups to produce an exceptionally dynamic playing experience. Blending vintage American tone with refined set-neck design, the Supro Westbury is intended for the professional musician who needs an ergonomic and versatile guitar capable of handling most genres of music with authority. The Westbury’s dual pickup configuration lets the player switch effortlessly between warm, single-coil neck pickup sounds, throaty bridge tones, or a perfectly balanced, parallel combination of both pickups for rhythm work.
The Westbury guitar and its relatives in the Island Series represent the rebirth of the Supro brand as a stringed instrument manufacturer. The Supro Island Series of guitars was designed by David Koltai and Glenn Sweetwood, with technical assistance from master designer Trevor Wilkinson and vintage pickup expert Ken Calvet. Case sold separately.
