Many Gibson signature guitars have the artist’s name engraved on the truss rod cover. However, Herb Ellis commonly removed this part to mount a George Van Eps string damper (a lever device that damps the open strings from ringing), so the signature is stencilled on the headplate.
During 2004, the single pickup was taken off the top and ‘floated’ off the end of the fingerboard and pickguard; the tone control was removed and the volume control moved to the pickguard.
The ES-165 was produced from 1991 until early 2013.
Neck | Mahogany neck with bound rosewood fingerboard; faux mother-of-pearl dual parallelogram position markers starting at the 1st fret. Black headplate finish with Herb Ellis and Gibson stencils in gold. |
Body | Flame maple laminate, single venetian cutaway body; full ES-175 size, but with one pickup instead of two. Rosewood bridge base. |
Finish | Gloss nitrocellulose sunburst lacquer finish in excellent condition. |
Hardware/electronics | All original and gold plated hardware; sealed Grover tuners with ‘tulip’ buttons, trapeze type tailpiece, single Gibson 490R pickup, volume and tone controls. |
Case | Original hardshell case included. |

By merging timeless tone and taste with utterly contemporary technique, Johnny A has earned a reputation as one of the most talented guitarists working today. The original Johnny A Signature guitar became one of Gibson Custom’s most popular artist models right from its unveiling in 2003. Now the new Johnny A brings the same blend of classic appointments and original design forward with a host of great new features, in a superbly versatile new semi-acoustic electric guitar that you’ll want to call your own.
Blending features of Gibson’s big archtops of the past with innovative techniques of today, the Johnny A Signature is crafted by Gibson Custom with a “thinline” body routed from a single piece of select Grade-A mahogany, capped with a two-piece figured maple top. Unique Johnny A “scimitar” f-holes, elegant multi-ply binding, and a luscious Sunset Glow finish in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer set the foundation for an extremely classy look. The quarter-sawn mahogany neck has the longer 25 1/2" scale length and rounded profile that Johnny A prefers. Unique inlays in a bound, Ebony fingerboard and custom headstock and gold-plated hardware complete the picture. Two of Gibson’s immensely popular 57 Classic humbucking pickups offer that legendary blend of PAF-style warmth and bite, while a genuine Bigsby™ vibrato lends retro twang and wobble when you want it

Gibson Joe Bonamassa "Skinnerburst" 1959 Les Paul
Of all of today’s Les Paul-wielding artists Joe Bonamassa is among the most revered, and the astounding 1959 model that he affectionately calls “Principal Skinner” is the most beloved guitar in his extensive collection. Now, following a long-coming collaboration between Joe and Gibson Custom, we are delighted to present “Skinnerburst,” a detail-perfect recreation of what is possibly the hardest working 1959 Les Paul in the world today. Through unrestricted access to the original and Joe’s generous cooperation, Gibson Custom has scanned, studied and measured every spec, curve and parameter of this guitar to bring you an instrument that reproduces this prized ‘burst in every possible way, exactly as it looks, feels, and sounds today.
From its delectably faded Dirty Lemon finish, to its custom-wound humbucking pickups, to its precise top carve and neck profile, the Joe Bonamassa “Skinnerburst” 1959 Les Paul gets you as close as is humanly possible to a priceless artist’s guitar. Historically accurate binding colors, aged cellulose trapezoid inlays, hot-hide glue neck construction, and period-correct hardware all complement a breathtaking rendition of Joe’s constant stage and studio companion.
1 of 150 in VOS finish (1 of 300 total made).

Aging was simulated by Historic Makeovers (under their "standard package"); this includes aging and relicing to simulate the headstock break and repair that the original DaPra 90627 had.
Certification from Historic Makeovers is included.
In 1984, when Vic DaPra set out to acquire an original '59 Les Paul (ser# 9 0627), he didn't have the luxury of the internet. "I had to wait for Polaroid pictures to come through the mail. It felt like forever." Rarely does an original late '50s Gibson Les Paul make it to us with such clean lineage. The days of "closet" finds are quickly becoming the folklore of a bygone era. Unearthing one of the very few two-owner 1959 'Bursts with so much character in its top is incredible: this guitar is astounding, from the billowy, unending, multi-dimensional flame to the softly mellowed hue of its now caramel-colored burst. Gibson Custom is excited to offer a very limited number of "Gruhn 'Burst" Les Pauls, hand-crafted featuring our True Historic features. To bring you the specific tone and feel of Gruhn 'Burst, we've re-created its neck profile and top carve through digital analysis of the original and tone-matched its pickups with specially wound Custom Buckers. To capture the finite details of this very special Collector's Choice edition, the color and wear are hand-applied and based on in-depth study of the Gruhn 'Burst, with Vic's personal involvement in developing and approving the run.

The 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue features all the painstaking historic construction methods of the famous '59 Reissues with a few historically-accurate spec differences that allow it stand on its own. Like the 1958 originals, it has narrow frets which help more of the fingerboard wood to be heard in the tone profile. It also has a round, chunky neck profile for a full feel and maximum bending leverage. And finally it has a beautiful plain maple top; each is unique and full of character.

Gibson's legendary former president Theodore 'Ted' McCarty helped develop some of the most iconic electric guitars ever during the 1950s and early 1960s, including the Les Paul™, ES-335, Flying V™', Explorer™', SG™', and Firebird™' models. He enjoyed sketching new instrument ideas during meetings, and the height of his creative output was in 1957 when he sought to modernize Gibson's electric guitar designs significantly. On March 18th, 1957, Ted detailed and signed his drawing for a new solid body instrument which was never produced…until now. Gibson Custom Shop is proud to present the "Theodore," inspired by Ted McCarty's original drawing and notes. Its unique features include an alder body, scimitar headstock, double Florentine cutaways, and a walnut center strip. The lightweight, balanced construction is extremely comfortable, and the powerful P-90 pickups produce effortless sustain and a rich diversity of tones. This very special Archive Collection run is limited to just 318 total instruments offered in three colors: Natural, Cherry, and Ebony. Each includes a Historic-style brown/pink case, a premium leather strap, a print of the original signed drawing, a 1957-style catalog page print, and a deluxe Certificate of Authenticity booklet.
