The Fender® American Vintage II series presents a remarkably accurate take on the revolutionary designs that altered the course of musical history. Built with period-accurate bodies, necks and hardware, premium finishes and meticulously voiced, year-specific pickups, each instrument captures the essence of authentic Fender craftsmanship and tone.
The Precision Bass®, the world’s first electric bass, represents one of the most important developments in music history. For the first time, bass players had access to a portable, precisely intonated, amplified instrument. As stated by the legendary Quincy Jones, the Fender bass was “…the one technological breakthrough that changed music forever.”
Although it initially shared many design cues with the Telecaster®, such as an oversized Tele® headstock, slab body and chrome control plate, by 1954, the P-Bass® had been updated with the same sweeping curves and contoured edges of the newly launched Stratocaster®. The American Vintage II 1954 Precision Bass reproduces the quintessential tone and feel of the original and is offered in two colors over ash: Vintage Blonde and 2-Color Sunburst mated to a single-ply white pickguard.

The late ‘50s to the early ‘60s was a watershed period in the development of the Precision Bass®, a time of transition that would see the introduction of many new appointments that would become synonymous with the P-Bass®. By 1960, the design of the P-bass had eclipsed the earlier cues culled from the Telecaster® - now the P-bass had a Strat®-style headstock shape, comfort-contours, pickguard mounted electronics and 4-saddle bridge. Adorned in 3-Color Sunburst and topped with a 4-ply tortoiseshell pickguard, the 1960 Precision Bass represented a more refined, enduring aesthetic for the model.

When Don Randall at Fender Sales requested a more sophisticated, high-end bass model, the now iconic Jazz Bass® was the result. The neck was narrower at the nut, providing a faster and more effortless feel and the sleek new body style mirrored the offset contoured style of the Jazzmaster®. By 1966, evolution of the instrument reached new heights with striking new features.
The American Vintage II 1966 Jazz Bass features a comfortable “U” shape hard rock maple neck, and it plays like a dream with a 7.25” radius round-lam rosewood fingerboard and vintage tall frets. Characteristic of production in 1966, this J-Bass® is offered with white neck binding, pearl dots, two volume controls with master tone, matching painted headstock and 4-ply tortoiseshell pickguard. Only a year after its debut, the Jazz Bass received a new control configuration in 1961 that featured a volume knob for each pickup and a master tone knob—a classic control arrangement that endures to this day. The 1961 Jazz Bass Heavy Relic is a faithful recreation of the time-honored original, with a few custom features prized by players worldwide. The two-piece alder body, hand selected for weight and grain, wears a Heavy Relic lacquer finish. The quartersawn maple neck features a ’60-style Jazz Bass “U” profile, topped by a 9.5”-radius flat-lam rosewood fingerboard with 20 medium jumbo frets for comfort and perfect action along the entire length of the neck.
As with the now-familiar control arrangement that first appeared in mid 1961, the hand-wound vintage Jazz bass pickups each have their own volume control, with a master tone knob. Other features include a four-ply brown shell pickguard, vintage-style bass bridge with threaded steel saddles, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and disk string tree. In 1959, the Fender Precision Bass was changing and this is a classic recreation early models of that year. The alder body has a perfectly Aged Black Journeyman Relic lacquer finish, and the one-piece quartersawn maple neck. It has a ’fat '59-Style Oval C profile, topped by a 9.5” rosewood fingerboard with 20 frets and cream binding.
A hand-wound 1962 P-Bass pickup lies underneath the chrome pickup cover with controls for volume and tone with vintage P-Bass wiring. This venerable model year introduced the now-familiar split double-rectangular humbucker pickup, the larger Strat-style headstock and the Three-color Sunburst finish. The body is constructed of two-piece hand-selected alder and is finished in NOS lacquer. The one-piece quartersawn maple neck has a ’57 “soft V” profile, 7.25”-radius fingerboard and 20 medium vintage (47095) frets.
A hand-wound ’57 P Bass pickup delivers perfect vintage low-end thump and is wired to master volume and tone controls. Other features include a vintage-accurate single-ply gold anodized pickguard, four-saddle vintage-style bass bridge, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and a disc string tree. Includes deluxe hardshell case, strap and certificate of authenticity.
