What started as a fun side project for Taylor Guitars co-founder Bob Taylor and two other tone-and gear-obsessed Taylor guitar nerds grew into Circa 74, an all-new, 2-in-1 acoustic/vocal amplifier designed to help musicians sound their best in any environment.

The idea: Build a great-sounding acoustic guitar amp you can also sing through. The guiding design thoughts: Make it compatible with a wide range of acoustic guitar pickups and playing environments. Make it practical and easy to use, without over-engineering it with too many controls or effects. Make the cabinet from an acoustic guitar tonewood to bring an extra warm, smooth sonic character to the amplified tone. Give it the elegant aesthetic appeal of a finely crafted piece of furniture. And add Bluetooth connectivity to stream music and play or sing along.

Working on the project reminded Bob of the creative, freewheeling spirit of a startup, like the earliest days of Taylor Guitars, circa ’74 — which gave birth to the name.

Ultimately, the group’s labor of love produced an amp that serves up an ear-pleasing range of acoustic sounds and brings out the very best in musicians looking to be heard.

This custom T5z hybrid hollowbody electric pairs a figured walnut top with a lightweight Urban Ash body, all dressed in a chocolately color treatment with a gloss finish. The top sports a shaded edgeburst stain, lending a dusky quality to the figured walnut. Other details include black purfling for the top and F-hole and a boxwood peghead logo to match the boxwood/koa S-Curve fretboard inlays. An all-gold hardware package includes strap and end pins along with Gotoh 510 tuners. This model also boasts chamfered body edges and an integrated armrest for added comfort. It features our proprietary three-pickup T5 electronics controlled by five-way switching for a diverse array of tonal options and ships in a brown deluxe hardshell case. Topped with an Adirondack spruce top and voiced with V-Class bracing, this model generates a punchy midrange with a sprightly top-end focus and warm lows, rich with sustain and projection. A traditional V-carve neck profile offers a different feel than Taylor players might expect, perfect for those who tend to wrap their thumb around the fretboard when playing. Appointments favor a subdued, yet elegant visual character, from the faux tortoiseshell body binding, rosette and pickguard to subtle ebony fretboard binding, Mini Diamond fretboard inlays in grained ivoroid and Gotoh 510 tuners in antique chrome for precise tuning.
